Matt's Comedy Club
Welcome to Worthing's family-friendly laughmaker
We've been running comedy nights in our splendid West Sussex seaside town since 2008, and this page is a quick introduction to what we're about.
Matt's began life as a one-off church gig organised by St Matthew's Church and has grown into one of the UK's top community-run comedy clubs, providing regular massively entertaining nights with a friendly atmosphere, a clean comedy ethos, and at great value prices! We're non-profit, so any funds left over after we've met costs get invested back into the club. We love to support and encourage local comedy wherever we can.
Acts we've put on include Milton Jones, Tim Vine (two Edinburgh previews in 2013), John Hegley, The Noise Next Door, James Acaster, Jo Enright, Paul Tonkinson, Henning Wehn, Zoe Lyons, John Archer, Slightly Fat Features, Harry Baker, Paul Kerensa, Celia Pacquola, The New Rope String Band, Andy Kind, Jay Foreman, Dyball & Kerr and many more. We also run regular Open Mic nights to encourage local talent.
From traditional stand-up to sketch comedy, music to mime, improv to magic, we've had it and thousands have come, including hundreds at the first ever Worthing Comedy Festival in 2010.
2017 – LINED UP for your delectation
26 January – New Year, New You, New Material: it's our open mic night ... with a difference:
- We pick the theme - this time we're chucking the topic of 'Identity' at the cream of the local comedy crop and asking them to come up with their best new stuff to tie in with it
- We're at the newly styled Pavilion Cafe Bar (ex Denton Lounge), with tables and chairs, all posh like
- Why not come dressed as your favourite hero (real or fictional, historical or current)? It's not compulsory, but there might be prizes ...
- Best of all: it's Pay What You Like – perfect for January when we're all skint from Christmas. We'll be passing a hat round, and you just pay what you think the entertainment deserves.
14 March – John Archer + Francesco De Carlo
Comedy magician extraordinaire John Archer - the man who Fooled Penn & Teller, and who Derren Brown booked for his dad's birthday party - returns once more for a night of banter, bafflement and nifty ukulele work. Support is highly acclaimed Italian stand-up Francesco De Carlo.
A cracker of a night you won't want to miss. And yes, it is a Tuesday. Tuesdays can rock, too, y'know.
18 May – Joanna Neary: Character Comedian
Jo's show at Matt's in 2016 was one of the top gigs of the year and had the audience beside themselves with laughter, so we've immediately booked her new show. This is a one-woman show (100 mins) combining razor sharp satire and highly original character comedy, on what it means to try and be creative.
In her capacity as a housewife and ex-art student, expect a hilarious look at the world through the eyes of a whole host of startling unknowns and familiar celebrity guest characters, all doing their best to express themselves in this extraordinary life.
You'll be talking about this one for months.
6 July - Sara Pascoe + support
Comedian, actor and author Sara Pascoe brings an Edinburgh Preview show to Matt's this summer in one of our most highly anticipated shows of 2017.
A regular performer on the small screen in shows like Mock The Week, QI, Never Mind The Buzzcocks, Live At The Apollo, W1A, 2012, 8 out of 10 Cats and more, Sara had her first book out in 2016: Animal: The Autobiography of a Female Body.
Nominated for best show at the 2014 Fosters Edinburgh Comedy Awards and winner of the 2014 Chortle Breakthrough Award, you won't want to miss this rare opportunity to see one of TV's most sought after comedians in action.
